The SSC Stenographer exam is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for recruitment to the posts of Stenographer Grade C (Group B, Non-Gazetted) and Stenographer Grade D (Group C) in various ministries, departments, and organizations of the Government of India. SSC Stenographer Exam Overview

The SSC Stenographer exam is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for recruitment to the posts of Stenographer Grade C (Group B, Non-Gazetted) and Stenographer Grade D (Group C) in various ministries, departments, and organizations of the Government of India. The exam is conducted in two stages: Computer Based Test (CBT) and Skill Test.


SSC Stenographer Exam Syllabus

Computer Based Test (CBT):

  • General Intelligence and Reasoning: Analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, problem-solving, analysis, judgment, decision making, visual memory, discriminating observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic reasoning, etc.
  • General Awareness: India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to history, culture, geography, economic scene, general policy & scientific research.
  • English Language and Comprehension: Vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, reading comprehension, active and passive voice, direct and indirect speech, spellings, idioms and phrases, and general English.

Skill Test Pattern:

  • Stenographer Grade C: Dictation for 10 minutes at the speed of 100 words per minute. Transcription time is 50 minutes (English) or 65 minutes (Hindi).
  • Stenographer Grade D: Dictation for 10 minutes at the speed of 80 words per minute. Transcription time is 40 minutes (English) or 55 minutes (Hindi).

SSC Stenographer Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality: Indian
  • Age Limit:
    • Stenographer Grade C: 18-30 years
    • Stenographer Grade D: 18-27 years (age relaxation as per government norms)
  • Educational Qualification: 12th Standard or equivalent examination from a recognized board or university.


SSC Stenographer Salary and Job Profile

  • Salary:
    • Stenographer Grade C: Pay Level 6 (Rs. 35,400 - 1,12,400)
    • Stenographer Grade D: Pay Level 4 (Rs. 25,500 - 81,100)
  • Job Profile: Typing and drafting letters, speeches, press releases, taking shorthand notes, transcribing them, assisting the office with clerical work, maintaining records, and other office tasks.
